About the circuit

The Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg, formerly known as Hockenheimring or Kurpfalzring, is a motorsport race track in Hockenheim, south of Mannheim in the Electoral Palatinate city. Originally a high-speed track, the circuit was drastically shortened and rebuilt in February 2002, creating new grandstands and overtaking opportunities for Formula One cars. The track was officially named Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg.

The renovation work cost over 60 million euros and led to increased entry prices. The financial burden led to Formula 1 alternating the German GP with the Nürburgring every year from 2007 onwards. This contract was extended until 2018. There was originally no planned Formula 1 race in 2019, but ultimately the 2019 German Grand Prix was held at the Hockenheimring. In addition to Formula 1 races, motorcycle racing events and events for historic vehicles also take place at the Hockenheimring. The track has also been the venue for Formula Student Germany, an innovation competition for pure student teams, since 2007.
