About the circuit
The Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours, located south of Nevers in France, opened in 1961 as Circuit Jean Behra and was renamed Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours in 1989. In addition to the 4.4 km long GP track, the 350 hectare facility also includes a “club” course, a kart track and an off-road area. The track is a regular venue for car and motorcycle competitions such as Formula 1, the World Touring Car Championship and the Superbike World Championship.
The current route length is 4.411 km with nine right and eight left turns. After modernization, the Circuit Nevers Magny-Cours is considered one of the most modern and safest race tracks in the world. Some sections are named after other famous racing circuits, such as the Adelaide Hairpin, Estoril Right-Hander, Nürburgring Chicane and Imola Chicane. The track is also known as a test track because it was designed based on the pattern of other race tracks.
The road surface is very flat, allowing for firm suspension settings and minimal ground clearance. This increases the contact pressure through the ground effect and increases cornering speeds. The route has fast and slow sections, which makes it difficult to adjust the aerodynamic aids. The track surface is temperature sensitive and can become hot when exposed to sunlight and slippery when it rains. The ideal line varies on wet roads to avoid aquaplaning.
Formula 1 drivers change gear up to 37 times during a lap and experience lateral accelerations of up to 4.2 g. The engine works around 65% of the time at full load and consumes around 2.8 kg of fuel per lap.
